Who we are

Not Just Stew is a reading site about the world's cooking, published by Stewart Honeyman, a private individual in the United Kingdom. He is the data controller for anything this site collects. The site has no company behind it, no staff and no advertisers.

The short version

You can read everything here without giving us anything. There are no adverts. You can optionally sign in with an emailed link so a copy of your kitchen record follows you between devices, and you can ask for a monthly letter; both are described below. We do not sell, rent or share data about you. The one thing we ask for today is permission to run analytics, and you can say no with a single press, now or later.

Analytics, only if you agree

We use Google Analytics 4, loaded through Google Tag Manager, to see which chapters and dishes are read, which are cooked, and where readers give up. Until you press "Accept analytics" nothing from Google Analytics or Tag Manager is loaded and no analytics cookie is set. If you press "Decline", or press nothing, it stays that way.

If you accept, Google Analytics records the pages you open, the dish and volume identifiers on them, and a small set of events we defined: a chapter read to the end, cook mode finished, a learning card turned, a dish marked cooked or saved, a correction link pressed, a glossary term opened, the reading depth you chose. It also records the kind of device and browser you use and an approximate location worked out from your network address. It does not record anything you type: notes, search terms and pantry lists are never sent, and we strip the search term from the page address before it is recorded.

The legal basis is your consent. Google Analytics sets cookies named _ga and _ga_ followed by an identifier, which last up to two years. Google processes this data on our behalf on servers that may be outside the United Kingdom, under the UK Extension to the EU-US Data Privacy Framework. We have configured the property with Google Signals and advertising features switched off and analytics data retention set to fourteen months.

To withdraw consent, press "Analytics choice" in the footer of the atlas (the pages that open from the home page) and choose "Decline". Analytics stops at once; the cookies already set can be removed in your browser's settings. The static dish, volume and technique pages carry no analytics at all.

What stays in your browser

Most of what the site remembers about your reading lives in your own browser's local storage: your analytics choice, the learning cards you have turned, where you got to in a volume, your pantry list, your time and kit filters, the dishes you have saved or marked cooked, your notes, and the reading depth you chose. That browser copy is never sold or shared, and clearing this site's data in your browser removes it.

When you are signed in, a copy of your saved dishes, cooked record, notes and reading depth is also held with your account so it follows you between devices; see Accounts below. You can download everything from Your kitchen.

Accounts

You can sign in with an emailed link; there is no password. Signing in creates an account holding your email address, the name you choose to show, and a copy of your saved dishes, cooked record, notes and reading depth so they follow you between devices. It does not sign you up to the letter.

Accounts are held by Supabase in its London region. You can download everything from Your kitchen and delete the account there; deletion removes every row we hold about you at once. Your browser copy stays unless you clear it.

Corrections you send us

"Know this better? Tell us" opens a Google Form. Google receives what you type there, together with the volume, dish and page you were on, which we fill in so you do not have to. If you choose to leave a way of contacting you, we use it only to ask about or reply to that correction. We keep corrections while they are open and afterwards as the record of what changed in the atlas and why. Google processes form responses as our provider.

Fonts and hosting

The site's typefaces are loaded from Google Fonts. When a page loads, your browser asks Google's servers for the font files, and Google sees your network address and browser details in that request. We intend to serve the fonts from our own site instead, and will update this page when we do.

The site is hosted by Hostinger International Ltd and delivered through its content network. Like any web server, it keeps logs of requests: the network address, the page asked for, the time, and the browser. We rely on these only to keep the site running and secure, on the basis of legitimate interests, and they are kept for the period Hostinger sets.

Email

If you ask for the letter, we keep your address, the time you asked, the version of the form and of this page you saw, and the time you confirmed. Nothing is sent until you confirm, and every letter carries a one click unsubscribe; unsubscribing is acted on at once and your address is kept only as a record not to write to you again.

The letter is sent through Resend, which keeps its account data in the United States under the UK extension to the Data Privacy Framework, and its mailing servers in Ireland. Your address and consent record are held by Supabase in London.

Your rights

Under UK data protection law you can ask what personal data we hold about you, ask for it to be corrected or deleted, ask us to restrict or stop processing it, object to processing based on legitimate interests, and ask for a copy in a portable form. In practice we hold very little: analytics data is pseudonymous and held by Google, and your reading record stays in your browser unless you sign in, when it is held for you by Supabase in London so it can follow you between devices.

Children

The site is written for adults who cook. It is not directed at children under thirteen and we do not knowingly collect anything about them.

Changes

This page carries the date it was last changed. When something on the site starts or stops collecting data, the change is described here rather than buried.
